Ankle replacement surgery is an important procedure that is done to replace the injured bone and cartilage located in the ankle joint. Our podiatrist, Adam Mucinskas, D.P.M., is trained to accomplish this surgery with the utmost skill and care. Please utilize our Patient Education resources to help you better understand the fundamentals of foot and ankle health.

Ankle Joint Replacement uses synthetic joint parts, otherwise referred to as prosthetics, to act as a substitute for your bones. The degenerative condition of arthritis that affects the ankle joint happens as the cartilage of the joint substantially wears down. When the cartilage has deteriorated to a greatly reduced level, bones grind on each other when the joint moves. This severely limits mobility and causes pain. Relief through medicines or braces may be used but may not provide the relief necessary to mitigate severe pain. If these treatments are not enough to stop ankle degeneration, ankle replacement would be the best option for providing relief. Ankle replacement swaps the damaged portions with metallic and plastic implants and, tendons are put back into place. The surgeon who performs this procedure will make a cut in the front portion of your ankle to reveal the ankle joint and will then move the tendons, nerves, and blood vessels to the side. After all this, the damaged bone and cartilage will be removed, replaced and stitched up. You may contact us right away to find out if you’re a good candidate for this surgery.

This procedure is generally a great option since you will retain ankle motion. During the recovery period, there may be a need for a cast or brace to prevent the ankle from moving since movement immediately after surgery can damage the newly placed implants. After the recovery period has taken its course, ankle mobility will return, without the annoying arthritic pain.
