At Feet First Foot Care Specialists, we know that many of our Middlesex County families love winter sports activities like sledding, ice skating, and snowboarding. Cold-weather fun outdoors is COVID safe and comfortable to have at a socially safe distance. To ensure that your family minimizes the risk of injury and winter weather-related injuries, follow the tips below:

  • Protect feet, hands, and the rest of the body from frostbite by layering. Start with a pair of socks made of a material that wicks moisture away from the skin, and then add woolen socks for extra warmth. Check skin frequently. If it appears white or your child complains of numbness, these could be the beginning signs of frostbite. Get them inside immediately to warm up.
  • Check that boots and skates fit. Properly fitting footwear helps avoid blistersankle sprains, and foot pain. If you or a family member skate frequently, be aware of Haglund’s deformity—an enlarged bony protrusion at the back of your heel that can be aggravated by the high-back of skates.
  • Stay tuned to the weather forecast. Temperatures can drop rapidly, and snowstorms can come up suddenly, impeding vision and increasing the risk of an injury.
  • Match the activity to current fitness levels. With the pandemic, many people have experienced a drop in their fitness level. If this is true in your family, be aware that muscle fatigue may occur more quickly than you’d expect. Being fatigued makes it more likely to sustain an injury. Call it quits if someone is getting tired.
  • Stay hydrated! Water breaks provide a rest opportunity as well.

At Feet First Foot Care Specialists, we know many of our Middlesex County patients try to put better eating habits into practice for 2021. We are supportive of this plan! Healthy eating has several benefits to your feet as well as the rest of your body:

  • Helps you maintain a healthy weight. Being overweight can cause or worsen several podiatric conditions, including heel pain, sesamoiditis, and arthritis.
  • Shedding pounds makes it easier to be more active. Exercise and healthy eating go hand in hand. When you weigh less, it’s easier to move more, and the more you move the more weight you’re likely to lose. Being physically active also helps keep joints flexible and improves circulation.
  • A well-rounded, nutritious diet means your body will get all the nutrients it needs. Some essential vitamins and minerals can improve foot health, such as calcium and vitamin D for healthy bones and vegetables and fruits that produce anti-inflammatory reactions, a key feature of several painful foot and ankle disorders.

Take Little Bites

Long-lasting weight loss takes time, however. It’s important to set small goals and not overwhelm yourself by overhauling your diet all at once completely. Below are some easy changes to make. Choose one or two, and once they become habitual, add a couple of more.

  • Swap water for sugary sodas, juices, and sports drinks. You may not realize just how many calories you’re drinking! This one easy substitution can save you hundreds of calories a day.
  • Cut carbs from one meal. Think about what carbs you really wouldn’t miss. Can you enjoy an egg with some fruit instead of toast or add an extra vegetable or salad to your dinner in place of potato or rice?
  • Shrink your plate. Use a smaller plate for your food, and you’ll naturally cut down portion size. Resolve not to have seconds!
  • Have a small, healthy snack before dinner. Your mom may have said snacking will spoil your appetite, but that may not necessarily be a bad thing! A glass of vegetable juice, a small salad or bowl of bouillon, or low-calorie soup about a half-hour before your meal may cause you to eat less at dinner.

If you’re like many of our Middlesex County patients at Feet First Foot Care Specialists, getting in shape may have been on your list of New Year’s resolutions. Being physically active has many pluses, both for your feet and your overall health. Maintaining an appropriate weight, improving circulation and flexibility are just a few of the many ways regular exercise can benefit you. However, we have seen many fitness plans fizzle without proper planning and preparation.

Here are three common pitfalls to fulfilling your exercise resolutions, and how to avoid them:

  1. Blisters—you wouldn’t think something as small as a blister could have such a large and devastating effect on your fitness plans, but they’re painful enough to sideline you for a few days. And a few days then becomes a few more, and before you know it, your enthusiasm has petered out. Footwear is the most frequent reason for blisters. Be sure you have the right shoes for the activity you’ve chosen. If you’re starting a new sport or activity or haven’t replaced your shoes for a while, consider getting a new pair designed specifically for your fitness activity. Sock choice is also key. A type that wicks moisture away from the skin will prevent sweat from causing friction between your feet and your shoes, which leads to blisters.
     
  2. Achilles tendonitis—this inflammation of the long tendon that runs down the back of your lower leg from your calf to your heel frequently happens at the start of a new fitness regimen. Why? Too often, patients start gung-ho on an exercise plan and hope to achieve quick results by starting strong. However, doing too much too soon—especially if you’re coming off a period of inactivity—can overstretch the Achilles tendon leading to pain and soreness. Gradually building up stamina and strength, increasing your fitness level over time is more likely to lead to injury-free success.
     
  3. Motivation Disintegration—there are many reasons for this to occur. Choosing an activity, you don’t like to do, not setting realistic goals, and foot or ankle pain that develops from your workout are a few possibilities. Put some thought into what factors are important and attractive to you in a fitness plan and think long-term.

A New Year brings resolutions for self-improvement. At Feet First Foot Care, we’d like our Middlesex County patients to consider some positive enhancements to their podiatric health. Simple changes that are easy to implement can make a big difference in the overall health and condition of your feet.

Here are five steps to take for healthier feet and ankles in 2021:

  1. Keep an Eye on Your Feet—regularly inspecting your feet will help you quickly spot changes that may signal a developing problem. Thickening or discolored toenails, for example, can indicate a fungal infection; red, itchy, peeling skin is a sign of athlete’s foot, etc. Look for growths, bruises, wounds that appear slow to heal, and toe joints moving out of position.   2. Limit Bare Foot Time—with many people working and schooling from home, it’s easy to get in the habit of not wearing shoes. However, this flattens the arch of your foot, which puts pressure on the plantar fascia that can result in heel pain. Put shoes on each morning whether you’re going out or not.

  3. Swear Off Bathroom “Surgery”—trying to remove an ingrown toenail or get rid of a wart with home remedies, and sharp implements usually end in a worse injury and/or infection. Leave podiatric care to our podiatrist, Dr. Adam Mucinskas.

  4. Wear the Right Shoe for Your Athletic Activities—don’t take long walks in fashion boots or use your regular summer sneakers for hiking. Sports and fitness shoes are specifically designed for your feet and ankle movement by the activity. If you have weak ankles, consider high top styles for extra support. Your fitness footwear has a lifespan limit (300-500 miles for walking/running shoes). Regularly check and replace footwear for wear.

  5. Don’t Ignore Foot Pain—perhaps one of the most important resolutions you can make for your feet this year is not to put off getting foot pain or discomfort evaluated.
