'Tis the season for shopping, wrapping, decorating, cooking, and entertaining! At Feet First Foot Care Specialists, we want to ensure all our Middlesex County patients don’t lose the “happy” in their holidays because of foot pain. Below are four tips to help you take care of your feet during this busy time.

  1. Function vs. Fashion—Choose Wisely—It’s a tricky season for footwear. There are many festive occasions you’ll want to dress up, but lots of tasks will require long hours on your feet. Don’t sacrifice your feet on the altar of style. Make a trusted pair of athletic shoes your go-to shoes for shopping days, and save the fashion boots and heels for holiday events only.
  2. Avoid Slip-Sliding into an Ankle Sprain—If you’re wearing those pretty heels for a holiday party, pack them and make your way to your destination in shoes with a good gripping tread to get you safely across slippery surfaces. Always scope out the best cleared and treated route to get to where you’re going. Don’t carry so many packages that you can’t see the ground in front of you.
  3. Be Merry—Without Overeating and Drinking—If you can avoid gaining weight in December, your feet will thank you in January. Excess weight has an exponential effect on your lower extremities. For every pound you gain, you put an additional 3-5 pounds of pressure on your knees and feet. If you are prone to gout, be on the lookout for triggers on the buffet table like shellfish, red meat, rich sauces, red wine, and beer.
  4. Know When to Say “No”—No matter how busy your holiday season is don’t ignore your feet when they tell you they need a break. It’s best to pace yourself and alternate days that require you to be on your feet with rest days. It’s also a good idea to put your feet up (elevated above your heart preferably) at the end of the day.
