At Feet First Foot Care Specialists, we know that all of our Middlesex County patients are focused on staying healthy during this time of the coronavirus. It’s also a good time to consider the health of your feet. April is National Foot Health Awareness Month, and we want to pass on some information on how to take good care of your feet.  They will carry you where you want to go for many years to come.

  1. Get a visual. Regularly examining your feet is one of the best weapons against foot health problems. Early detection means less invasive treatments and quicker recoveries for many podiatric disorders. Look for changes in the shape of your feet, bruises, growths, discoloration of nails or skin, swelling, or anything else unusual. Report anything concerning to our podiatrist, Dr. Adam Mucinskas, so that it can be evaluated.
  2. Keep it clean. One simple way to improve the health of your feet is with a good care regimen. Start by washing your feet every day with soap and water. Apply a rich moisturizer at night to prevent dry skin and cracking. Use foot powder before putting on socks if your feet tend to sweat in excess. These steps can go a long way toward preventing athlete’s foot and other infections
  3. Stay active. Even in this time of social isolation, it’s important to commit to regular physical exercise. Your feet benefit by maintaining flexibility and good circulation. Physical activity also helps keep your weight down, which helps reduce foot pain and lowers your risk for several conditions, such as plantar fasciitis.
  4. Keep your feet covered. Toenail fungus and other foot infections spread by direct contact. Wearing flip-flops or shower shoes when you are at the gym, town pool, dance studio, and other public places when they re-open will reduce your risk dramatically.
  5. Choose shoes wisely. Look for well-made styles that have heels two inches or lower, roomy toe boxes, and cushioned insoles. Now is a good time to go through your shoe wardrobe and discard stretched out pairs, have flattened insoles, unevenly worn heels, or visible damage.
