Athlete’s Foot can start from a fungus and can happen to anyone. It, however, often occurs to athletes since they generally wear footwear that is closed and can become very warm and moist after high-intensity activities. This condition produces red and itchy conditions on the feet. Individuals who walk barefoot in and around moist surfaces near public pools, showers or locker rooms can acquire the fungus that causes this condition. After the fungus gets onto the foot, it can still be averted if:

  • Feet are dried regularly.
  • Shoes are not too narrow.
  • Socks are changed frequently.

To prevent this condition, shoes should be sterile to make it tougher for a fungus to cultivate while keeping them hygienic. This method should be followed by using anti-fungal medications via powder or oral forms. Utilizing leather or open toe shoes to allow the foot to dry out, washing feet daily, keeping feet dry when required, using foot powders and wearing sandals when utilizing a public pool or locker room to stop fungus from getting onto the skin of the foot can all help to avoid the chances of contracting this condition.

Treatment for this condition includes antifungal medications, antibiotics and keeping feet dry with medicated powders placed inside of shoes. It’s also important to note that if someone else in the household acquires this condition, it is highly recommended that showers are sanitized to prevent another outbreak from of this condition.
