Calluses develop as portions of thickened skin on the feet caused by friction. Their purpose is to act as protective mechanisms of the skin so that it is a barrier to deeper injuries. This condition is usually found on the sole of the foot or on the heel because they are the areas of the foot that endure most of the pressure produced from walking or running. Those who do not wear shoes when required can cause this condition to form on the bottom of the foot. Calluses can also form when there is an abnormality in foot wear that causes brushing against the skin of the foot, when the toe box of the shoe is small or when females wear high-heeled shoes. To avoid this from happening, shoes with wide toe boxes, greater deepness, and lower heels (where applicable) should be worn.

Other options include trimming the excess skin if there is no infection present, use of orthotic inserts to counteract any deformity in the foot leading to the development of this condition and surgery if there needs to be a realignment of the bone to prevent ongoing friction from occurring on specific areas of the foot. If there are other complications that form as a result of calluses, ongoing inflammation or fever, antibiotics will have to be utilized.

Due to the potential pain and complications that calluses can cause, please contact our offices to receive an accurate consultation. We'll develop a treatment plan that can relieve your feet from the pain and discomfort of calluses.
