The Achilles Tendon is very important to foot and ankle health. In particular, Achilles Tendinitis is a common foot injury.  It can be painful since the pain originates from the Achilles Tendon from the back of the heel. It can unfortunately be an agony for athletes, especially those who run frequently. Our podiatrist, Adam Mucinskas, D.P.M., can provide safe treatment to alleviate your pain. You can visit Dr. Mucinskas at Feet First Foot Care Specialists, LLC, located in Cromwell, CT.

Achilles Tendinitis is the swelling, deterioration and the unbalanced healing of the Achilles Tendon, which is the big tendon in the back of the leg that insets into the heel. Pain from this condition can gradually increase and be of varying levels, even without a major incident being the cause. The gradual nature of this condition tends to leave many of those afflicted with it surprised when the pain becomes significant. If it’s left untreated, the tendon can break. This would unfortunately require surgery.

Activities that commonly stress the tendon can cause this condition and swelling would be the first sign. In certain instances, long periods of standing can also cause pain. Home remedies and anti-inflammatory medicines may fail since the actual muscle shortens and produces a regular strain. Exercising and ice may reduce pain but will only provide minor relief because this helps reduce swelling rather than repairing the damaged tendon.

Physical therapy such as acupuncture or wearing special shoes are sometimes effective to reduce pain. For those runners out there, tendon pain does not always occur at the time of running and will likely occur within 48 hours after the activity. Using the preventive measures discussed above right away may help reduce the severity of an injury caused by Achilles Tendinitis.

The earlier this condition is treated, the more likely physical therapy will help. If you are experiencing Achilles Tendinitis, please contact our office for an appointment as soon as possible.
