At Feet First Foot Care Specialists, we know that the coronavirus pandemic has meant many changes for our Middlesex County families. Being confined largely to the home can cause everyone to go a little stir crazy. If you’re looking for a fun and educational activity to share as a family, why not explore some different cuisines?

Healthy Meals

One positive aspect of the current situation is cooking and eating meals at home. Home cooking makes it easier to control ingredients and make healthy choices. It’s also a great way to save money. Before getting started, talk to your family about healthy eating habits. Encourage the search for new cuisines and recipes that will:

  • Be high in lean protein
  • Low in saturated fats and sugars
  • Feature vegetables and fruits prominently
  • Be packed with flavor from low-sodium seasonings

Travel the Globe

Explore countries around the world that your family members are interested in. Is there someplace they’ve always wanted to go? Is there a type of restaurant that you normally enjoy going to together? Make a list of cuisines you’re interested in learning more about. Pick one and start researching. Look up information online about the country of your choice. Learn about the foods that are most often eaten there and the methods of cooking that are commonly employed.

Next, plan a meal with specialties from the country you’ve chosen. Try to use items that you already have in your pantry, or that can be ordered in your next grocery delivery. Then get cooking. Give children jobs that are appropriate to their age and ability. Here’s a chance to have a fraction lesson while measuring ingredients. Teach basic cooking methods to older children. Let young children help wash vegetables and stir. If your children enjoy arts and crafts, encourage them to make decorations for the table that reflect the culture of the country. Who knows? You may emerge from this time of self-isolation with a new repertoire of family favorite recipes and want to make cooking together a permanent addition to your routine.

Stay safe! As always, remember that you can call on our podiatrist, Dr. Adam Mucinskas, with any podiatric concerns by contacting our Cromwell office at (860) 632-5499.
