September is Peripheral Arterial Disease (PAD) Month! Commonly referred to as poor circulation, this condition results from restricting blood flow in the arteries of the legs and feet. In today’s post, Dr. Mucinskas at Feet First Foot Care Specialists shares what you need to know about this serious condition.

When the arteries are narrowed by plaque, the oxygen-rich blood traveling through the arteries can’t reach the feet and legs. The occurrence of PAD may be an indication of more extensive arterial disease that can affect the heart, causing a heart attack, or that can affect the brain, causing a stroke.

Signs and Symptoms of PAD

Most people exhibit no symptoms during the early stages of peripheral artery disease. In many cases, the arteries are already considerably blocked when symptoms are visible.

Common symptoms of PAD include:

  • Leg pain or cramping that occurs while walking or lying down.
  • Cold feet or legs.
  • Leg weakness or numbness.
  • A change in leg color.
  • Sores that will not heal on feet, legs, or toes.
  • Changes in toenail thickness and color.
  • Loss of hair on the legs and feet.

Risk Factors

Because only half of patients with PAD exhibit symptoms, it’s important that people at risk get tested for PAD.

Some risk factors include:

  • Smoking (previously or currently).
  • Being age 50+.
  • Diabetes.
  • High blood pressure.
  • High cholesterol.
  • Personal or family history of PAD, stroke, heart disease, or heart attack.
  • Sedentary lifestyle.

Avoiding PAD Complications

  • Get regular foot exams.
  • Wash your feet daily.
  • Keep the skin soft.
  • Trim toenails straight across and file the edges.
  • Examine your feet daily.
  • Buy the proper wear shoes and socks and always wear them.

If you develop any of these complications, seek professional help immediately. Do not try to address sores, cuts, or infections yourself.
