Our minds at Feet First Foot Care Specialists are turning toward images of snow-covered slopes. Activities like skiing, sledding, and ice-skating lure many of us outdoors in the cold weather. We want to remind all our patients who consider themselves winter adventurers to prepare properly to enjoy winter sports safely.

Do: Always Wear Proper Footwear.

According to the National Ski Areas Association, nearly 10 million Americans enjoy participating in winter sports activities such as skiing and snowboarding. Our specialists recommend you always wear proper footwear for any activity. Do not participate in activities like skiing or snowboarding in footwear other than ski boots specifically designed for that purpose. Make sure your boots fit properly. Your boots should leave you enough room to wiggle your toes slightly, but the boots should immobilize the heel, and ball of your foot for the best protection. You can also use orthotics to help control the foot's movement inside ski boots or ice skates.0282364001672243243.jpg

Don’t: Let Your Feet Get Wet or Cold.

Keeping your feet warm and dry will enable you to enjoy your sport comfortably for several hours. While multiple pairs may help, the material of the socks is what matters. Wool socks will do a better job of insulating feet, and wicking moisture than cotton socks do. Reducing sweat means reducing friction, and the chances of getting a blister. Plus, they make great stocking stuffers.

Do: Make Time for Physical Preparation.

Going from the couch to the slope is a quick route to injury! Try some warm-up exercises before you begin and remember to stretch before and after vigorous activity. Our specialists recommend you use good form and good sense when participating in winter sports. Winter sports require stamina and require skills and it is important to prepare your body.

Don’t: Ignore Pain in The Lower Extremities.

If you ever experience pain or discomfort in your feet and ankles, do not ignore it! Our specialists recommend removing excessive weight on the injured foot. Contact our Cromwell office by calling 860-632-5499 to see our podiatrist, Dr. Adam Mucinskas. While you wait for your appointment, use the RICE regimen (rest, ice, compression, and elevation), and stay off the affected foot as much as possible.
