Turf toe happens when an outside force is brought onto the big toe causing a sprain in the ligaments around the big toe joint. We understand team sports and realize that sports play hard on your body and cause a variety of injuries to your feet. While the outcome of the game may show a win, injuries like turf toe, set you back in the game by several points and could take you out for the season.

What are the symptoms?

  • Pain and tenderness in the ball of the foot and the big toe area.
  • Limited big toe joint movement.
  • Unable to “push off” using your big toe.
  • Difficulty bearing weight on the ball of the injured foot.
  • Swelling in the big toe and ball of the foot.

What are the causes?

  • Pushing off from your big toe and having your weight shift suddenly to the other foot like many football moves would require.
  • Sudden injury to the big toe mostly seen in soccer and football where the playing field is artificial and is harder than grass.
  • Wearing shoes that do not support the big toe for the specific sport – if the foot bends too far you are at more risk.

What are the treatments?

  • Stay off your feet as much as you can and it just may help it heal on its own.
  • Wrap a compression bandage around the big toe to help with swelling.
  • Use a cold pack with a border from a towel or washcloth and apply to the area several times a day for about 20 minutes each time.
  • Seek professional care.

Turf toe is a simple injury but can become complicated when it comes to the condition of the tendons, ligaments, joint surfaces, nerves and bones in the affected are around the big toe. Although flexible shoes and synthetic surfaces are a big risk for this injury, there are some easy solutions to prevent turf toe from happening.

Our children come first when it comes to everything in life. No matter what age or size their foot is, we understand the safety of having the right shoe for the right activity.

Here are some educational facts to get you started:

  • Infants that are just starting to walk do not need shoes to assist that wonderful moment when they take their first step. They could use the room to develop and grow their little feet plus it encourages them to use their toes to grab onto the floor.
  • Once a toddler is walking their need for properly fitted shoes becomes important. The shoe should have toe room and space to grow and wide enough for their feet to wiggle.
  • High top shoes are recommended for younger children who can’t seem to keep their shoes on but be aware that they do not offer any advantage in terms of support.

Keep some of these tips in mind when shopping for your children’s shoes:

  • Both feet must be measured (standing up) each time you buy a new pair of shoes since your child’s feet grow continuously.
  • Put your hand inside to feel around for sharp staples or deformities from the manufacturer that could hurt their feet.
  • Let them walk around and even (safely) run a bit in the store to test them out.
  • If it is hard to get them on and you feel as though you are forcing their foot inside the shoe, don’t buy them.
  • Bring a pair of socks that your child wears frequently and let them try the shoes on with that sock to ensure a proper fit.

Here are some things to remember before you start your search:

  • Injury is the first consideration when buying your child’s shoes so while they may be adorable, make sure they are safe too.
  • Deformities should be examined by an expert before shopping for any shoe.
  • Check your child’s feet for a growth spurt if they are constantly removing their shoes, it may not just be because they are playing.

Cysts are a bulging sac-like bump that fills with liquid and can be caused by infection, trauma, inflammation or clogged oil glands.

Types of cysts:

Ganglion Cysts are a benign growth attached to a tendon or tissue that surrounds the joint of the foot. They can make your feet burn and irritate your skin.

Mucoid Cysts are basically a ganglion cyst that grows on the fold of the toe. They are most common in older adults between the ages of 40 – 70.

Inclusion Cysts are lumps that form underneath the skin in the wake of a mild injury like a cut or a scratch and remain small.

Plantar fibroma cysts are hard knots that are found deep within the skin on the arch of the foot. They are non-cancerous, small cysts on the top of the foot or over a tendon. They start off soft but can become harder over time.

  • The size of a cyst can fluctuate and get larger when you use that joint more and more. They are generally painless but if pressed on a nerve pain can certainly develop. 
  • Treatment is best done in the podiatrist’s office. If you have heard of the “bible therapy” method which involves a heavy book and using it to smash the cyst, don’t bother as it will create complications! The only home remedy that we suggest is to use heat to try and reduce the size but that is temporary.
  • The best way to prevent a cyst is to wear well fitted comfortable shoes and try to protect yourself from foot injuries. However, if you develop a cyst it can be treated by extracting the fluid from inside the cyst and draining it until it can heal.

Do your feet feel like they are burning up but the rest of your body is cool?  While it may seem like an anomaly there are several reasonable answers to this question about burning feet. While some conditions are more transparent than others Feet First Foot Care Specialists, LLC  practice in a host of clinical mysteries that you may not be able to solve on your own. 

Here are some cases:

  • Hypertension can be a culprit if you have questionable blood circulation because it effects the pulse rate in your feet.
  • B12 is an important vitamin that works in conjunction with your nervous system. If you are deficient in this area it can contribute to a burning feeling in your feet.
  • Toxins and drugs are never good for you but certain exposure can damage peripheral nerves and cause your feet to swell and subsequently feel like they are burning.
  • If you have suffered any nerve damage in your legs or feet it is likely that the burning sensation is a result of nerve malfunction.
  • Fatigue and over exertion can cause temporary burning in your feet.
  • Excessive alcohol intake is hard to measure but should be considered a relevant factor.

Diabetes, which we did not mention earlier, is the most dangerous since it threatens so many other parts of one’s health. If you suffer from diabetes and your feet are burning, then you should contact a podiatrist or doctor immediately.

Here are some remedies:

  • Certain herbs can help such as Hawthorne or Thyme. They both increase blood flow.
  • If you buy shoe insoles that protect your feet from rubbing inside your shoe it relieves friction which reduces heat.
  • Vitamin B3 also known as niacin strengthens the nerves and prevents them from breaking down.
  • A cold foot bath will temporarily relieve pain simply by its temperature alone.
  • Whether you are walking in the heat of the summer or the cool days of winter and your feet start to burn remove your shoes in a safe place and let them breathe.
  • Blood circulation is compromised when burning occurs therefore, getting those limbs moving is vital. Exercise can have long term effects if you remain consistent with your routine.
